Cancellation of Local Elections
JLAC is beginning the necessary ground works to launch a new campaign concerning the cancellation of the up-coming local elections. This campaign is being waged in the name of good governance and the innate right of all people to elect their local officials. In this regard, JLAC (in cooperation with two organizations, Al Haq and Addameer) filed a case against the Council of Ministers and the Prime Minister for their June 11, 2010 decision to cancel up-coming local elections scheduled for July 17, 2010. Their action was deemed illegal on the grounds that the postponement of elections should be justified, temporary, and upon the demand of the Independent Central Elections Committee. However, the elections were cancelled for sheer political reasons as the Committee had announced its readiness to hold elections.
